Calculate Your Powerball Annuity in Dollars or Pounds

Choose where your Powerball ticket was purchased. US tickets offer annuity or cash payouts before tax. UK National Lottery tickets have a separately advertised sterling jackpot paid over 30 years, with no lump-sum option.

How the 30 Powerball annuity payments grow

Each bar represents a US annual payment before tax. Payment 1 is immediate; payments 2–30 rise by 5% every year. The 30 gross payments total the advertised annuity prize, allowing for rounding.

Cash option: federal withholding vs estimated final tax

US lottery operators normally withhold 24% federal tax on qualifying jackpot winnings. Your actual federal income tax may be higher; this calculator separately estimates the incremental tax using 2026 federal brackets, the selected filing status and your other income. The state rate is an optional flat assumption.

Important: The estimated final tax is not added to the 24% already withheld. Withholding is a prepayment of federal income tax. The estimated after-tax payout uses estimated total federal tax, not withholding plus final tax.

Investment returns are smooth illustrative assumptions, not predictions. The simplified tax/drag percentage is applied to investment gains, not a precise annual capital-gains tax calculation. Cash interest is an entered net rate.

How Powerball jackpot payouts differ in the UK and US

Both countries participate in the same Powerball jackpot, but there are important differences. In the United States, a winner can take the published cash option or 30 graduated annuity payments, normally before federal and applicable state taxes. A UK National Lottery ticket wins a separately advertised sterling annuity amount, paid over 30 years, without a cash-out alternative. UK lower-tier prizes are funded and administered separately from the US prizes.

The UK advertised amount is stated after applicable prize-tax treatment; this calculator does not deduct additional UK prize tax. It does not convert an American headline jackpot into the UK operator’s advertised jackpot. For the UK example, the 5% annual increase is an illustrative assumption based on the US structure, not a verified UK payment schedule. The official UK payout may differ.

How the US Powerball 30-year annuity works

US Powerball offers an annuity paid as 30 graduated installments over 29 years, with the first payment immediate and the remaining 29 increasing by 5% each year. The published cash option is a separate figure and varies by drawing.

Powerball cash lump sum vs annuity: what is the difference?

The advertised Powerball jackpot is the total of its estimated future annuity payments. The cash option is the separate estimated amount needed to fund that annuity. It varies by drawing, so a fixed 50% or 60% multiplier is not reliable. Enter the cash value actually published for the jackpot you want to explore, or use the illustrative example and change it.

A 30-year after-tax total is not comparable dollar for dollar with cash received immediately. The calculator therefore also shows the annuity's discounted present value using your chosen rate. Results depend on that rate and the tax assumptions, not just the size of the jackpot.

How much tax is taken from a Powerball jackpot?

For a qualifying US taxpayer, federal withholding on lottery winnings is generally 24%. That amount is paid ahead of the eventual federal income tax calculation, which follows progressive tax brackets. This tool estimates the extra federal tax attributable to jackpot payments using 2026 brackets held constant for illustration, and allows an optional state-rate assumption. Actual state rules, future tax changes, residency, filing details, deductions and other income can alter the result.

Does a UK Powerball winner pay tax on their advertised prize?

The advertised sterling jackpot is presented after applicable prize-tax treatment, so the UK version of this calculator does not take a second tax deduction from the amount entered. Income or gains earned after receiving a payment may be taxed separately, and unusual residency circumstances can change the position. The UK Powerball jackpot is paid over 30 years with no lump-sum cash alternative.

What could you do with the money after tax?

A payout estimate is only the beginning. Our Lottery Lifestyle Calculator lets you imagine a spendable starting pot, choose homes and gifts, and explore a lifetime budget. That separate Dream Life calculator currently uses pounds, so do not treat a US dollar payout as an equivalent pound amount without an appropriate currency conversion.

Figures here are hypothetical and for educational comparison, not a live Powerball quote, tax advice or a guaranteed payout. Read our calculation approach and the official source material.

Powerball payout calculator: common questions

Is the UK Powerball jackpot a separate prize fund?

The jackpot pool is shared across UK and US tickets. The prize funds and amounts for lower-tier matches are separate, and the UK jackpot is advertised in pounds under different payout terms.

Can UK Powerball jackpot winners take the cash option?

No. A UK National Lottery Powerball jackpot is paid as an annuity over 30 years. US jackpot winners may choose the published cash option instead.

Are the UK and US jackpot amounts converted using a fixed exchange rate?

No. The US jackpot is advertised in pre-tax dollars; the UK National Lottery publishes its own sterling figure after applicable prize-tax treatment. We use that separately entered pound figure rather than assuming a currency conversion.

How many payments are in the Powerball annuity?

Thirty payments over 29 years: one immediately, followed by 29 yearly payments increasing 5% annually.

How do you calculate the first annuity payment?

For a headline jackpot J, the first payment is J divided by the sum of 1.05 raised to powers 0 through 29. The next payments are the previous amount multiplied by 1.05.

Can I calculate a Powerball cash value from the headline jackpot?

There is no single accurate fixed percentage. The official cash value depends on the prize pool and the cost of funding the annuity. Enter the cash option published for the drawing rather than estimating it from a fixed haircut.

Is 24% the final federal tax rate on my Powerball jackpot?

No. The standard 24% withholding is an advance federal tax payment on qualifying winnings. Federal income tax ultimately depends on progressive rates and the taxpayer's circumstances.

How much of my Powerball winnings can I spend each month?

Select a lifestyle preset or enter your household costs, one-off purchases and investments. The spending and investment planner estimates extra monthly spending that can be funded over your chosen forecast, assuming the investment returns and inflation rates you entered actually occur.

Can I spend my entire Powerball prize instead of investing it?

Yes. Choose “Spend the entire available prize” in the lifestyle planner. It covers your budgeted costs and directs the current year's remaining prize payment to additional lifestyle spending, rather than investment. No money is borrowed to cover a shortfall.

Can I invest Powerball annuity payments as I receive them?

Yes. Choose the annuity model, select your monthly and one-off expenses, then choose what percentage of the remainder to invest. The simulator keeps cash and investments separate and shows transfers and investment growth each year.

Does this calculator predict future federal and state taxes?

No. It uses 2026 federal tax brackets for an illustrative projection, holds them constant for future annuity payments, and uses a user-entered flat state rate. Actual taxes will differ when laws or personal circumstances change.
